I've been searching for tilapia not raised in China. This appears to be American raised (although it might just be packaged in America). Mom says her package doesn't say it was farmed in China. Has anyone noticed if any of our local stores carry this brand, or have you found a brand of frozen tilapia that isn't raised in China?

I hadn't even thought about this. Our Kroger frozen Tilapia says it's a Product of China. Sigh.

It's probably impossible not to buy things raised or made in China at this point. But, I'm just really wanting to buy American whenever possible. With fish, I always have other alternatives, but I do miss my tilapia. The minute I find some raised in America, I'll choose that brand. But, I'm not tossing my Chinese raised fish I already have in the freezer.

What's going on? Do we hate China now? Did they have a bad batch of fish or something? Oh man, we didn't just invade them now, did we? :p

LOL! No, it's not about hating China. There have been so many recalls involving Chinese products, (food, toys, dry goods) but besides that, it's also about supporting American workers. Too many jobs have been outsourced -- not just to China. I've also read a few articles/arguments that China could shut down our economy with one political move, but I'm not very well read on that theory, other than to say I hate to see our country get overly dependent on China for our manufacturing. Then, there are the issues regarding "sweat shops," virtual slave labor, and stuff. Again, not just a "China" thing.

Personally, I just want to support American made/American raised products. This day and age, it's not easy, or always even possible. I can start with fish, though. I love tilapia, but catfish will do. Good old fashioned, farm raised in Mississipi catfish! I'll buy tilapia again when I find some raised in America.

Now, do you want to hear my salmon requirements? :p

Speaking of catfish, when we were supposed to be camping a few weekend ago, we went out for dinner after setting up camp :p. We went to a place in Conroe - Vernon's Kuntry Katfish (and man does it irk me when they deliberately spell things wrong, but dh insisted we go here) - it's fairly far down 105 and on the left.

Dh had remembered eating there as a teen and I think the place may have grown a bit since then, but I hadn't had food like that since before my grandma (cajun) died nearly 20 years ago. Fried catfish, hushpuppies with pickled green tomatoes on the side, oysters, etc. All cooked very southern like my grandma used to do. Perfect. And the place was packed - we had to wait a while for a table, but dang, it was worth it.

Gosh, we still have tons of Tilapia in our freezer from our boatload(s) we caught camping last spring. Someone told us it was trash fish on the dock. Tell that to Red Lobster and Landry's. It is GOOD stuff. We were netting them by the hundreds. The guy that was with us took back several hundred for a church fish fry. We kept about a 100 (if I remember correctly). Dh and dd cleaned and filleted them all while still there at the cleaning station.

It's even better since they made it non smoking!!! But I miss the hostess who used to call out peoples names years ago, she was just precious. There portions are quite as big as they used to be but they are great!!!

Vernon's Kuntry Katfish

Someone else was just telling me recently that they went there and enjoyed it. I'd like to try it out too.

It's got to be at least 10 miles out (West). Seemed pretty far out there.

I usually buy my Tilipia at HEB. It's Fresh not frozen. It's a product of Equador not China. It tastes a lot better than the frozen, nice big filets.
