Vau might have had contact with youth through his church, Fellowship of The Woodlands, authorities with the Albuquerque Police Department said Wednesday.

My daughter was just telling me that a local dance instructor was charged with molesting a girl as well. It seems you just can't get away from them. :(

I think it's a good reminder to not "trust" your child with an adult just because of where you met them at. I'm just as cautious with people I meet at church as I am with the guy standing on the street corner when it comes to my kids. You have to minimize the opportunity for these people to strike.

I doubt these people are molesting them IN the dance class or IN the scout meeting, etc..... There has to be a time when they were alone with the adult. THAT is what you need to avoid. I don't understand how these adults had the opportunity to be alone with a child.

An out and out rape probably wouldn't happen at the public function. It is when the child (and more than likely the parents) trust a person that it could happen. When the person can be alone with the child.
However, an inappropriate, albeit brief, touch could possibly happen in a public function. These things should be reported, because it might stop a molester in his or her tracks before a rape occurs. We really all need to talk to our kiddos and tell them to report anything that makes them uncomfortable or seems out of the ordinary. In other words, they shouldn't be so embarrassed or shocked by an inappropriate touch that they cannot talk about it, or don't know how to talk about it.
Fellowship of the Woodlands is very strict on security for the kiddos. But, that is not a 100 percent guarantee, either. Keep an open line of communication open with your kids. The kids might get confused over "a hug" and "a hug with a more sinister purpose," but they should never, ever be keeping secrets! The dance studios and the churches can only do so much. Without reports, no organization will know what to investigate AFTER the background checks are done.
