La Mesa Mexican Bistro
1701 Lake Robbins Drive (in the former Taco Milagro location, across from the ice rink)
Telephone: 281-602-7070
We where doing a little shopping today and did not feel like battling traffic and valet parking on Market Street. We heard about this new place and decided to check it out.
La Mesa is in the old Taco Milagro location. At first I was concerned about parking (DW doesn't like it when I paralell park the Suburban in a space reserved for a compact car and bordered by two expensive Euro sleds...) but we discovered convenient parking belonging to the resturant and Fidelity behind the building.
When we first entered I had a feeling that La Mesa was not going to be a good experience. Why? The place was 75% empty and at first glance the menu appeared to be long and complicated (yes I have been watching too much Gordon Ramsay recently...). However our waiter (William) put us at ease and when the food started coming we felt that we discovered a place that is about to explode!
We where served complimentary chips with two nice sauces. The traditional picante which was thick and spicy and a cilantro cream sauce. We where also given rolls and what looked like garlic butter. DW and I decided to try a few things and share our dishes.
We started with chicken empanadas which arrived covered in sauces. I was taken a little a back but they are excellent. Very flakey pastry with ample filling. They went a little overboard on the sauces but this was the kitchen's only fault during our meal.
For our second course we shared their chopped salad which had black beans, corn, different kinds of ruffage, avacados and was finished with a light - creamy dressing and served in taco salad shell with tortilla strips. That was one of the best salads I enjoyed in a long time!
Our main dish was the poblano peppers (one beef and one cheese) served with traditional rice and beans. Good pablanos are hard to find and we really enjoyed this spicey zesty dish.
We did not have room for desert, the portions are generous but at the same time prepared neatly, none of this mess of an overflowing plate covered in cheese and sauce. Our meal totaled 24.51 with tax which for the quality of food and service we received was an excellent value.
I noticed a lot of different things on the menu like ceviche, trout, mole, duck enchiladas, etc. They also have quite the wine list and the place is spotless and elegant on top of everything else.
You guys need to check this place out! It is really really good!! We can't wait to go back for dinner and to get into the wine.
