I'm looking for a new place to get my hair done. Highlights and a cut. I've been going to Brian of London and like what I'm getting but last time after my highlights a different girl blow-dried my hair and when I asked them to break up the price so I could tip they told me the blow-dry was $35! I was shocked a blow-dry could cost so much. Anyways I'm looking for somewhere new, any suggestions?

I love, love, love Chez Shay Nobelle on Rayford. I have been going there about a year now. 281-419-2040. I use Nikki and love her. But, I'm sure the others are great as well.
A haircut is $25. I usually pay $40 with the tip, so I'm not sure how much the blow drying and styling (straightening for my hair which is VERY curly) is, but not much.

I got a "perfect for me and my unmanageable hair" cut in another city this past week. Now, I'm worried that I'll never be able to find anyone to duplicate it. The funny thing is: It was at a "Super Cuts" type place, I paid $14.00 plus tip, and it is the best cut I've had in a very long time!
My hair is either frizzy, wavy, or curly, and it seems that short layers work really well for me. It's a "no fuss" cut for me, which I appreciate.
Think that lady on Rayford can duplicate it? Do you have the number?

Oh, an afterthought: What do you all leave for a tip? I've always just left 20% of the bill. Is that appropriate?

I've heard a lot of people say how much they like Chez Shay Nobelle. I never been there, but may this time. I need a hairstyle. The ponytail just isn't working anymore :p. I've tried just about every other place in The Woodlands since we moved here. I have some favorites - Salon Kendall and L'Avantage, but I'd like something a little more reasonably priced. I do love Nick at L'Avantage / Alden Bridge, though, for my boys.

Completely off topic, but familygal - I LOVE that picture of your granddaughter! She is such an adorable baby :) Seeing her picture always makes me smile (and makes something inside me ache a little....!!). I'm trying to convince DH to have one more next year, but no luck so far!

I don't know if it's appropriate or not but I usually leave 20% where I go. I use Jeri at Sierra Day Spa and Salon. It used to be Rendevous and actually the last time I went it still said that on the marquis at the road. It's in the same lot as Krogers on Rayford/Sawdust (not sure what the road is called there). She charges $38. I've been to her three times and like her.
Eagle I know what you mean. Where I used to get a haircut before living here I paid $25 and had been going to the same lady for ten years. I really liked her and she has been very difficult to replace.
I've used Brians of London($40 for cut/blowdry, L'Advantage (way over priced - think it was $65 then you have to add the tip ), Toni's in the Mall - $40 and that big place in the Mall where you can see all the stylists - used Rachel there $40. I really liked Rachel but I don't think she worked full-time and her schedule didn't go along with mine plus they were always running way behind there.

Thanks. I put that outfit on her, then out her on a red comforter and took about 40 pictures of her. I swear some of them were as good as Studio One I took her to last week! :)
I posted the number to Chez Shay Nobelle in my first post. I HIGHLY recommend them. I honestly went to SuperCuts for a LONG time, just unwilling to pay more than $15 for my haircut. I have super curly hair and figured any cut is fine because you can't SEE the mistakes. But, I learned that "I" can see the mistakes and it makes a heck of a big difference when styling. Plus, I have been wearing it straight for awhile now and LOVE the cut Nikki gave me. And, a good cut lets you wear it longer, therefore you don't go as often, saving $$. I had never had highlights until last year also and received a gift certificate for my birthday. Since then, I have done it twice and will continue to splurge on this for myself. I am at a point in my life where I have decided to stop cheating myself out of stuff. I don't go spend $100's of dollars on my hair, but I am now paying more and loving it. I also stopped by my underwear at Wal-Mart and am splurging on Victoria's Secret. I swear it makes a difference in how you FEEL about yourself. I have had a lot of compliments on my hair, it takes less time to mess it with it because "falls" correctly.
Go there and at least try them once. They aren't super expensive. They are a mid-priced salon, in my opinion. I don't have the money or desire to spend a ton, but I have decided to spend more than SuperCuts. But, to be honest, it is the stylist that makes the difference, not the salon. The higher priced salons are just going to be more choosy about their stylists. So, the chances of you getting a better one are higher. THe problem I had with cheap places, is that I got someone difference every time I went and never came out with the same cut. It was a gamble each time if I would like my cut. Now that I only use Nikki, I know I will be thrilled. :)
Oh, and I have decided it is better to have 10 pairs of quality underwear than 30 pairs of cheap ones. :) GO SPLURGE ON YOURSELF!
I usually tip 20% at the hair salon. I want my stylist happy so I stay happy.

You sure don't want to make your stylist angry.:D
Sometimes DH kills me. We were at a nice restaurant the other night and granted the waiter, although he was nice and courteous, was slow and not as attentive as he could have been. DH figured the tip down to the last penny. It was hilarious. He absolutely refuses to leave more than 15%. I won't quote the exact dollar amount but the cents was .12 (for example $9.12) I'm sure the guy loved the extra 12 cents. :D
I would be afraid to go back to my stylist the next time if I didn't leave 20%. If I look at my cut and know immediately I will never go back to her again:mad: I would leave less.

Well I have to admit - my hair is not easy. It is thin and very fine - silky - hard to cut and I wear it in a very simple very short blow dry pixie cut. I went to Shay cuz everyone liked it and although I liked it there and the stylist - she did not do a very good job on my hair so I did not go back. And it was such an inconvenient place. I stopped going to Brian's due to cost - he charged me $48 for my haircut and did not have to blow it dry.
I went to Kevin's at D'Amine's in Kroger center by Martinis. He was great - but again not convenient.
I tried Village Cuts in PC and lo and behold found a stylist who cuts it as good as Brian and it only costs me about $23. Hard to believe!

I go to the Aveda Institute. We have done everything from cuts to hair straighten perms and have always come out of their pleased with the look and the price. The hair straighten perms for long hair is $45 and everywhere else nearly $100. 2 of us can come out with a hair cut and facial waxing for $45.00. I have been going there for over a year and always been pleased. They are behind Home Depot.

They are definitely inconvenient to you, CG, and really anyone in the back of The Woodlands.
I would like to try Aveda for the straigtening perm. I am SO tempted to do that as my hair is very curly. But, I've never had a perm or something permanent like that, so I am SCARED to try it. I keep telling myself it will grow out if I don't like it. Although I love my hair straight now and it takes a long time to get it that way.

I tried straigtheners back in college, and even top of the line professional straighteners only lasted a week or so. I'd probably have better luck now, but if my hair is cut right, the curls aren't overwhelming and I like them. I've got to have short layers, though, and it is hard to find someone who wants to do that for me. I'm going to give Chez a try next time. I may plan on the Aveda Institute for a little nail pampering in a week or so. I've had bad luck with Aveda highlights in the past, though. I think they use a "better for your hair" lightener, but the color didn't "take" in my hair the first time around.

My daughter has done the straightening perm 2xs. Her hair is so curly that the even with the chi straightening iron it takes hours to do. She only has to go about every 6 months to get it touched up because of new growth. She still uses a straightening iron on it but it looks wonderful.

I've read about Shez Chez or whatever the name is and have driven by but I live at the END of Woodlands Pkwy so it is out of my way, I may give them a try. Do they do color?
There is a new place back here near the Y and I may try them. I really should try some places in Magnolia since we are really much closer to there then to the I-45 area.
Thanks so much for everyone's suggestions!!

I just tryed Texas Hair Team on 242, next to Shankz. I love my haircut and they cut DD as well- she has super curly hair and we asked for short layers. I didn't know what their prices were usually and was expecting at least $35 for my wash, cut & dry...I was plesently surprised when the bill came to $18! DD was $12.
I think next time I will be going in fo highlights.

You go girl! Men, look the other way now!! ;)
I've always been that way about bras, it's easier to pay more for a properly fitted, quality bra and take care of it than to be poked, gouged and have to endlessly replace the cheaper ones.
For some reason Victoria's Secret underwear has never impressed me and the stitching seems to fall apart after the 3rd or 4th laundering so now I just splurge and buy the same brands as my bras or something of equal quality and they last a long time also.

I agree. I used them more as an example. Most of their stuff doesn't fit me. I end up over at Lane Bryant! I'm just tired of granny panties and cheap bras. It really does make you feel different to wear quality stuff. I have gotten that way about my clothes as well. I am spending more money on quality stuff and just buying less, but enjoying it more. I was raised with quantity versus quality and have decided that QUALITY is the better way to go.
Funny because my mom is the one that is all about quantity and my dad is all about quality. He is the wealthy one and she is not. He can afford to buy as many as he wants, but doesn't. He buys quality, so he buys less in the long run. That is how I am trying to be. Hard habits are hard to break though.

You sold me on them, TXrose, and I had an appointment today for a much needed shampoo & style. I'm very pleased with the service, the outcome and the price! It was $15.00 plus tip so I paid a grand total of $20.00 and made an appointment to return on the 24th to get some highlights to supplement, or replace, the silver, grey and white ones I already have. :)

I finally learned to adopt my mom's habit - definitely quality over quantity. I've always paid a lot for bras but still not sure I'm getting what I should be wearing. SG - mind me asking what brand you buy? I've bought Bali for years and a few years ago I went to Dillards and had appt with a Bali fitter. Man she sold me 3 Bali bras that were supposedly better fits for me (much smaller size than I had been wearing) and I never could get used to them being so tight I could not breathe. But yes, I guess I did have good support - just could not stand the misery.

I was first fitted when I was 12 or 13 and again periodically over the years as I changed. I wore Bali for years and just recently saw a fitter at Macy's who set me up with several different bras from different manufacturers and the Bali bras just didn't fit as well as the Wacoal did nor did they provide the support. The Wacoal are what I ended up purchasing and while she recommended that I wear them adjusted more tightly than I had been they aren't uncomfortable.

Ah yes. I bought a Wacoal several years ago and remember that I did like it. Perhaps I'll try that again.
