I hope Elisabeth Hasselbeck walks around the set topless and nurses in front of Barbara Walters.

What prompted this topic? What have I missed? I was in jury duty yesterday and did not get to watch tv.

Barbara Walters was not on yesterday when Elisabeth brought her baby and they talked about breastfeeding like it was the most normal, natural thing in the world.
Barbara is pretty outspoken with her disgust regarding breastfeeding.

Wow, I hadn't heard that. I would think Joy would be the one like that. Go Elisabeth! :)

Wow! I had no idea Barbara was that way. How could anyone show disgust for breastfeeding? That is beyond me!

One time on the view she talked about how the woman sitting next to her on an airplane began to breastfeed her baby and it made BW "nervous" and "uncomfortable", which naturally, sparked outrage within the pro-breastfeeding community.
It was nice to see them talking about breastfeeding in a positive light, in Barbara's absence :).

I agree! I can see that aman might feel uncomfortable around a breastfeeding woman, but no woman should feel uncomfortable! It's not as if they had never seen a breast before, lol! My SIL breastfeeds around us all the time. Granted she does use a "hooter hider", aka nursing cover-up, but no one feel uncomfortable around her.

I am not at all "uncomfortable" with breastfeeding but like Barbara I am uncomfortable with seeing it done in public places. Back in the day, that was just not done - it was done privately.

It is probably a generational thing. My MIL breastfed and the nurses in New York at the time thought she was either poor or barbaric. She was neither.

It was definitely a class thing at one time - if you could afford formula, you didn't breastfeed. ETA - of course, back then they thought it was okay to feed a baby karo syrup!

My dad's mother was in her mid 40's when he was born and it was believed that her breastmilk was no good because of her age so he was given cow's milk. He has suffered from serious allergies his whole life. HMMMMM

:o I have to admit when a women does it in front of me, it makes me uncomfortable. Especially if they aren't discreet but even if they are I've always felt strange carrying on a conversation with them while they were doing so. I breast fed my kids but if we had company I'd always go hide in my room. It's just too weird for me. Even when I was young and I saw it I didn't like it. Probably some kinda psychological thing, maybe....

I feel compelled to warn everyone that I nurse my babies anywhere I'm at and I don't do anything special to hide or cover up. I use the baby to cover up my flabby tummy, but I was never real worried about flashing a tiny bit of boobie-skin. My biggest concern was always the nursing baby pulling my shirt up, so I had other things to worry about :p. I don't have a nursling ATM, so no worries.
Nursing bras, t-shirts, and sometimes a sling were all it took and most of the time nobody ever even noticed what we were doing.
That's what they're for - get over it! ;)

I breastfed in the day when women were sually encourged to use a stall in the ladies room. When we visited my inlaws the first time, my MIL asked me privately to go to the basement. I ignored her (go me!) and threw a blanket over the "area" and soon no one cared.

I wouldn't say it outloud, but I would love to have said something like "why don't you go to the basement to have *your* dinner"? ;).

LOL! :D I have a hard time understanding why some people are so shocked about a baby having a meal but don't seem to have a problem with women showing a lot more of their bare breasts on magazine covers than I've ever seen when a woman is breastfeeding a baby.
