View Full Version : Allergic to Jammies?

As if it's not bad enough that my 5-year-old son can't eat anything with nuts or nut products, we recently came to find out that he has a latex allergy and can't use erasers! He always seemed to start sneezing and would break out in a rash after touching his face every time we homeschooled him, and we finally figured out that he did that only after using an eraser. NOW we have found out that people with latex allergies can also be allergic to polyester. We discovered that after doing some research on the Internet when he broke out in hives after wearing a blanket sleeper made of 100% polyester. I never would have guessed that a kid could be allergic to pajamas!

Have you taken him to an allergist?

He has been to one in the past, but not since we suspected the latex allergy, although we are in the process of getting a referral. I was actually kind of worried about my husband taking him to the doctor yesterday to get the referral because his rear end and the backs of his legs were bright red and covered in hives, and it looked a lot like he had been beaten!

I need to get my youngest, well really both my kids, to an allergist. I've heard they might be able to get my youngest's stinging-insect-allergy down to a not-so-scary level.
My oldest is allergic to Texas. He's constantly got shiners under his eyes and both of mine have the "allergy salute" across their noses. I took them both to an allergist in Tomball when we first moved here and they were both allergic or sensitive to almost everything she tested them for. And that before we knew about my youngest's anaphylactic reactions. Sigh...

While dd was doing her internship at the hospital last year, she started breaking out in hives. Finally figured out it was the latex gloves she was wearing. They sent her to the ER to get a shot. Now when she gets pedicures (or goes to the dr) she has to make sure they do not use latex gloves. She has also noticed that after eating some fish (not all) that her throat starts closing up!
When I read the subject line, I thought "if I was allergic to jammies, I would be a huge hive right now!" Had them on since yesterday! Just showered and put on clean jammies. It is supposed to be -10 tonight.

I have a mild latex allergy, myself. Regular, prolonged contact makes me break out.

I read that the allergic reaction to latex/polyester gets worse with more frequent or prolonged exposure, which explains why he didn't have a problem until now. When I went to buy him cotton PJs last night, I was surprised to find 100% cotton and 100% polyester character PJs mixed together, and they all looked pretty much the same to me.
His skin doesn't look much better yet, even after using Triamcinolone cream, an Aveeno bath and cotton PJs.

Latex is definitely an exposure thing. I never really used to react to anything, but while DH did extensive chemo, I started having problems with the gloves I had to wear while doing things for him. When I was in the hospital for Little Bit, I had them post a latex sensitive sign on my door.

My youngest has this as well. I didn't realize it was allergies until I got really worried about the dark circles under his eye.

I'm glad you at least take your kids to the allergist. My SIL insists that her daughter (who is 5) is allergic to corn. She has no real proof and refuses to take her to an allergist. Therefore we can't give her hardly anything to eat and they buy so much organic stuff that they can't afford. Nothing wrong with organic (naturally!), but if you really can't afford to shop that way.... I don't understand why she won't take her to an allergist - it just makes sense to, but instead she drives everyone crazy that the little one can't have this, can't have that, etc.

I had a daycare mom who insisted her son was allergic to milk so requested that I give him only nonfat milk  (isn't that.....milk?)

I think sometimes people confuse allergic with intolerant. My kids were both lactose intolerant, still are, they can drink some nonfat milk but whole or too much of any milk will upset their tummies. I am the same way. We don't break out in hives or have trouble breathing which is what truly allergic people would do. Don't kids outgrow allergies sometimes?

I hope so. DH seems to be allergic to everything, though. Last night I had all the windows flung open and Little Bit kept coughing and coughing. She was asleep, and I had her propped up in bed thinking drainage was making her cough. DH came through and closed all the windows; said his allergies were bothering him. Five minutes later Little Bit quit coughing, too. I guess I will have to have her tested, but I just don't want to have her poked yet; she wouldn't understand.

What is in the air lately? I don't usually suffer from any allergies but lately I'm stuffy and my nose is itchy. Is it pine pollen? Or maybe molds from all the rain?

I don't know what it is, but my dh's spring allergies have already hit in full force. I really wish he'd see a doctor...

We took my 5-year-old to an allergist to have him tested for a nut allergy when he was only 2. I just had a "feeling" that he should be tested before giving him peanut butter for the first time (strange, I haven't had that feeling with my other kids). I figured they would just test him for that, but they insisted on doing a full allergy test with all the pokes on his back  I almost had to leave the room. I was really upset that they would do that to such a young child. He did better than I expected (better than I did) with it. We found out that he is allergic to peanuts, tree nuts and eggs.

My kids both had the back-pokes testing done (they were ~18m & 3y) and it was a nightmare. I haven't been in a hurry to go back.

Same here with my SO and toddler. Spent the afternoon outside yesterday and now both are suffering runny noses. Our pediatrician prescribed Nasonex last summer so we will refill that and start him back on it for the season. SO takes Rhinocort and swears by it. After yesterday's weather I am convinced Spring begins mid-February in S. Texas! I can recall wearing a tank top and mini skirt last Valentines Day! Before we know it, it's gonna be hotter than hell again.

It's the tree pollen.
I'm pretty sure it's spring here already despite what the groundhogs say. The birds are back in full force. I have a pair of cardinals nesting outside my window, and my azaleas have sprung.
