We have lost another of our hometown heroes.

SPRING, Woodlands Texas

Pfc. Zachary R. Endsley, 21, died Monday from wounds suffered when his unit was attacked by enemy forces in Arghendab District, Afghanistan.

Endsley was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 4th Infantry Regiment in Hohenfels, Germany.

"We miss him here so much. We know we'll get to see him one day. I'm just going to miss him while I'm here on earth," mother Melinda Carroll said. "Words don't describe how proud I am of him."

Endsley was due to be home in three weeks.

"He made the ultimate sacrifice for all of us. I'm convinced he didn't think about it a day and he went out there knowing that this could be the day he got killed. But he just did it. He just did it," Carroll said.

His pastor called him a true hero.

"Zach woke up. He did his job and he paid the ultimate sacrifice for us in doing that. Good kid -- to me, that's somebody that we can look up to. They're not doing it for stardom. They're doing it because they have a passion. I think they have a big heart and Zach had a big heart," Pastor Larry York said.

A worship and prayer service will be held at Crossroads Baptist Church in The Woodlands on Wednesday evening. It is the second soldier from that small church to die in Operation Enduring Freedom in the past four months. Pfc. Cory Kosters died in March.

It's heartbreaking. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

What a shame.
