Social Security Numbers Turn Up Online in Public Documents
The owner of a California based security and fraud prevention company has reported that he was able to find former Dallas Cowboy quarterback, Troy Aikman's Social Security number on the Texas Secretary of State's Web site.
After an online search of business documents, Steven D. Peisner, president of SellitSAFE.com, was able to find more personal information on Aikman and the Social Security numbers of others.
In 2005 the Secretary of State's Office and other governmental bodies were given the authority to remove Social Security numbers from public documents as they were filed with the office. However, documents filed earlier than 2005 still contain Social Security numbers, and documents available online date back as far as the 1800s. The documents include corporation filings, federal tax liens, trademarks and limited partnership filings, among others. Details about residential mortgages are not included.
People can contact the Secretary of State's Office to have the information removed from their documents. The Secretary of State's office will also work on its own to go through the documents and remove the numbers.
