I am so thrilled to say that the local EMS are getting huge raises. (Huge for them at least.) Our local EMS has always been paid less than most of the services in the state and make a helluva lot less than Woodlands Fire. Lots of EMTs and Paramedics have been leaving MCHD to go to Woodlands Fire Dept or nursing because of the low pay. MCHD is now trying to be competitive with Woodlands Fire.
Did you know that an EMT starts off at about $8/hr? That is LUDICROUS!!! Do you realize what they need to know to help you or your family in an emergency? (A nurse has the luxury of asking a doctor what needs to be done. A Paramedic needs to make the decision right then on scene.) My husband has been with them for almost twenty years and certainly makes a helluva lot more than that, but it makes me ill that EMTs and Paramedics start off less than I ever made in an office. Heck, some of the fast food restuarants start you off at $8/hr now!
They are short so many times on the ambulances because they can't hire or retain the employees. Many, many times ambulances are shut down here in Montgomery County because there are not enough people to work them. That won't effect you until you NEED an ambulance and you have to wait 20-30 minutes for them to cross the county.
Anyway, I am thrilled to say we may be getting as high as a $20,000 raise. Dh and I are actually pretty happy with his salary, but we sure won't turn that raise down. I am just REALLY happy to hear the starting salaries will go up dramatically. That is a GOOD thing for Montgomery County.
