Miss USA fell on the boardwalk. She was nevertheless selected in the top 5. The Mexican audience boo'd her when she was called to answer questions.

How rude of them to boo! I can't imagine how embarassed she was to fall. I'm glad she wasn't hurt.

Is the frowning smilie because Miss USA was booed or because she made the top five even though she fell? I don't understand post. The booing was bad but maybe making the top 5 wasn't good either since she fell.

I took it as a frown because of the booing. That's pretty crappy to me. I hadn't thought that it could be because of her making the top 5.
I stopped watching pageants when I was about eight. :D

I don't watch them either but I checked out a news link after that post. Miss Japan won.

I heard on the news this AM that Miss USA might have actually gained points from recovering so fast from her slip.

I would have given her extra points for that recovery! She did not let a little problem keep her from keeping her poise and smiling as if nothing had happened. It was incredible!

Ah, I get it now. Do you think she was good enough to still make the top 5 even though she fell? I would think anyone that fell would mess up their chances to go further. But, it is still rude to boo ANYONE for any reason.
Edited to add: I didn't see it, but if she recovered so well, I agree that may have upped her chances. Good for her!

The emocion was for the booing. It was rude. My take on that was that the crowd thought she was selected because she is American, not because she deserved it. A typical anti American sentiment.

Natv, that's what we used to be advised when I was on a womens drill team. If you make a mistake we were advised to continue and recover just as if it didn't happen. That told us that in competition that's seen as a good thing because it shows the person has poise and will be able to recover whenever they may make a mistake in front of an audience which is going to happen to everyone at one time or another. It's considered a plus to show how well you can recover.
