Most of the college students who got the mumps in a big outbreak in 2006 had received the recommended two vaccine shots, according to a study that raises questions about whether a new vaccine or another booster shot is needed. The outbreak was the biggest in the U.S. since shortly before states began requiring a second shot for youngsters in 1990.

My son got mumps in kindergarten, he had his vaccinations and the dr's figured he got it from a different type of virus but they were mainly guessing. He was miserable! I hope this means he is now immune from ever getting it again.

It was my understanding from a program I watched that this was not surprising to the medical community. The two shot program is considered to only be 90% effective. I had to get an MMR booster when I went off to college. I specifically remember being called into the Quack Shack to get it. Maybe there was a small outbreak that year that I don't remember?

You are right BD, and the virus, just like the flu virus, can mutate

Wow, I didn't even realize people still got mumps anymore! I remember the last MMR shot I got was before doing my clinical internship with a urogynecologist. Something about law (or maybe it was the clinic itself) requiring me to do so, as well as get a TB test.
I've never had chicken pox and have always heard that if I were to get it as an adult then it's much more serious. Anyone know if this is true?

I've always heard that as well. But you might have a titer done at some point to see if you've had a very mild case and have enough antibodies/exposure in your body already.
