I am new to The Woodlands area and looking for a good obgyn doctor. Does anyone have any good suggestions? It does not really matter to me whether they are male or female. My husband and I are thinking about having kids in the next year and so I am hoping to find someone that I would feel comfortable with in the delivery room.

One question to ask is do they plan on continuing to deliver babies. There are some around here that have chosen to eliminate the ob from the gyn. I can't blame them considering the hideous hours and the liability, not to mention the insurance premiums.

There are several doctor's in this office. I have seen Dr. Ritter for years; he will be delivering my second next month. I can also recommend Dr. Giannotti in the same office; several of my friends see him and adore him; he was the on-call doctor the night I nearly lost my first (she's two now) and he was wonderful, too.

I second the recommendation for Giannotti. Great guy!

I L-O-V-E Dr. Emma Sims - Women of The Woodlands is her practice and there are 2 other female Dr.'s in her office. I saw Dr. Westmoreland once for my well woman and she seemed as awesome as Dr. Sims. Unfortunately, I don't think Dr. Sims is accepting new patients, but I can't speak for the other Dr.'s in her office. Dr. Sims is absolutely awesome and the nicest and sweetest person you will ever meet. Her bedside manner is the best. She will be delivering my son (my 3rd child) in 2 weeks :) Call to see if Dr. Sims is taking new patients - if she is, I cannot think of anyone I would recommend over her. Here is a link to her website:

I saw Dr. Jane Reed at Specialists for Women for my first two pregnancies and switched to Dr. Sims when my insurance changed. Dr. Reed specializes in high risk pregnancies, although I was not high risk. She is awesome at what she does, but I was a little put off by her bedside manner. She is totally professional, but just not as personable. With my second child she seemed to open up a bit, but she can be kinda "chilly" if you know what I mean! Her staff was awesome, especially her nurse Kathy! That is just my opinion of her, but I have heard the same from many people, including labor and delivery nurses! But, she is great at what she does and despite a bit of "chilliness", I wouldn't hesitate to recommend her office.

In Dr. Reed's office, I see Joan Stokes. Not sure of her exact title, but since I'm not gonna have any more kids, I see her. She can write a script, do the pap and whatever else. I can't remember her title, tho.
(ps...you can get in to see Joan MUCH faster than the dr., expecially being a new patient. I think new patient could be as much as a 4-5 month wait.)

My mom has seen Joan Stokes as well. I believe she is a Nurse Practitioner.

I have seen Dr John Williams for several years now. He is about to deliver my 3rd baby. He is in the St Lukes office building, and since we had such a bad experience with the anesthesiologist at Memorial, I am happy I will be delivering the baby there!

Stokes is a NP and a very good one. I enjoyed seeing her as well as the entire professional staff. It's the sort of place you'd want to take your teenage daughter to.
Aggie - I too was a little disappointed in Memorial Herman The Woodlands Hospital birth experience. Some of the nurses were awesome but there are alot of things I wanted to see differently.

I have a "Dr.Westmoreland" and phone number tacked up on my to-do board! It's been there since last summer; can ya tell how bad I am at putting off making appointments for myself!? :p
Anyway I must have gotten a recommendation for her to have her info written down so I guess I'd recommend Women of the Woodlands, too. (even though I haven't been yet!)

I had 2 great birthing experiences at Memorial Hermann, so I have no qualms about delivering there again. No hospital is perfect all of the time and nurses get cranky at times. I guess I would if I had to deal with some of the whining we new moms can dish out, LOL!

I have used and will be using Memorial Hermann again, too. Can vouch for their NICU too.
I can understand going elsewhere when you have a bad experience, though. I have changed doctor's offices twice now, because I had a problem with the staff. *sigh*

Overall the staff at Memorial Herman was ok - I was not overly impressed.
However, I specifically had an issue with Dr. Pham, the anesthesiologist. He was TERRIBLE. I was terrified of the epidural and was crying (not hysterically mind you). He yelled at me and told me that he gave epidurals to 13 year old girls who werent as big of babies.
I had to have a procedure about a year later there, and when he walked in I about had a panic attack. They removed him and called a different one. I have heard several complaints against him. I just wont chance going back there.
I also like the fact that St Lukes specifically uses Texas Childrens doctors. My pediatrician recommends St Lukes for any type of child related issue.

*Wow* Come to think of it, there is a specific doc in the MH emergency room that I have an issue with myself, stemming back to when my DH was in the process of being dx'ed with cancer. He was still there when my FIL went in for something recently, and I was unimpressed all over again.
My pedi has us take Little Bit to St. Luke's also, since they have pediatricians in the emergency room.
My OB does not have an agreement with St. Luke's, but I am comfortable with the women's center there. They got to know me very well two years ago. The hospital that docs are affiliated with is definitely something people should consider when looking for one. Good point.

My oldest was born at Texas Women's in Houston - they nearly killed both of us, so with the second I opted for a homebirth with a midwife. It was perfect and I'd choose that for any additional births as well.

A good choice for some, but IMO not for high risk pregnancies.

You have to meet certain criteria to homebirth with a good midwife. And some OBGYNs/hospitals can turn a normal pregnancy into high risk ;).

If you don't mind sharing, how did the hospital people almost kill you?

I used a mid-wife with my second, she was great! I was going to have her in the mid-wife's free standing birthing center which was basically a converted home but because of some problems I had to use a hospital. She delivered and the nurses all told me how much they loved her. She wasn't exactly the mid-wife most people would think of, she was a retired lt. colonel(or the equivalent) in the Air Force and she had bleached blonde hair she wore up in a twist ala Cindy McCain. She delivered something like 4000 babies.

That's obviously a little bit of an exaggeration :p. Baby got "stuck" (which wouldn't have happened had I not had an epidural that paralyzed me from the waist down and I could have been moving around), the OBGYN pulled on his head to get him out, she broke his shoulder and he wasn't breathing at first. Then I started hemorrhaging. Throughout the 16 hour labor, I was denied food & drink, and all that "normal" hospital BS. I'm just lucky to have not had a c/s while there. Oh, but let's not forget the horrific episiotomy...

Hi all! Wanted to re-visit this topic again to get more feedback on Memorial Hermann...I have a (first) appt with Dr. Westmoreland but they are only affiliated with Memorial...and it appears there have been some bad experiences there...I also did an online compare with my insurance and St Lukes is rated better...should I consider changing doctors? Any more suggestions for OBGYNs (female)?

I am assuming you are talking about Dr. Holly Westmoreland? If so, she is in the same office as my OB, Dr. Emma Sims. I saw Dr. Westmoreland once during my most recent pregnancy and I like her a great deal. I just gave birth 6 weeks ago at Memorial Hermann and it was pleasant and wonderful all the way - I can't think of any complaints! The nurses were great and didn't bother us too much. I have nothing but nice things to say about my experience. This was my third time to give birth there and none of my stays there were bad at all.

I've had two there in the last two years or so, and the staff there has done a good job both times.

I used Dr Meyer at Women's Health Affliates, but he is retired now. I currently go to Dr. Behne and he is really nice and located in The Woodlands. My mother in law sees Dr. Giannotti and really likes him...she has been going ther for years. They are all part of the same practice.

Have to second/third the recommendation for Women's Healthcare Affiliates. I use Dr. William Crowder and have been very pleased with him. Dr. Ritter was on call when my son was born and did a wonderful job. Can't say that I have ever had a problem with anyone in there, including nurses, staff, etc. Both sons were born at Memorial Hermann and it was a great hospital. Son #1 had issues with breathing when he was born and I was happy we were at MH - their NICU is a higher "level" than St. Lukes and is equipped to handle more severe cases without having to send the baby downtown. The birthing rooms there are excellant.
