I'm looking for the least messy way to take fingerprints of 8 boys (quickly). Some kind of ink that won't be too permanent and washes off relatively quickly? Do I just use a regular ink pad or is there some kind of special fingerprint kit at Hobby Lobby or somewhere?

Have you checked with the Sheriff's Department? I don't remember the ink that comes in their kits being extremely messy. I mean, yes, messy, but it didn't stain and washed right off.
You didn't say why you were taking the fingerprints, but I know there is a dentist in the area that collects teeth imprints. If this is for a cild find type project, that might be another option.

It's for my Cub Scouts. We're working on our law enforcement requirements this week and one of the things we can do it take fingerprints. I think I've found a better way, though... I've made these very cool fingerprint cards and we're going to have them with us when we visit the police station. If the police can do it while we're there, then great; if not, they can do it at home later. But I've changed my mind about doing it as a separate project! Another option was casting footprints in plaster lol.

Use the washable kids' ink from Hobby Lobby or Michaels. Even if it gets on their clothes, it will wash out. It is on the rubber stamping aisle with the ink pads.
