LOL! I totally agree! It's a double-edged sword, though. My brother will lose his house if the right storm comes along and my parents may as well. Not to mention my grandparents... aunts & uncles, cousins, friends, etc. Historically, droughts are followed by hurricanes, but I don't want mass destruction, either. They're all hanging on to an insurance thread as it is and in some Texas Pool Insurance something or other.

Tropical Storm Dean: Dean is nearing hurricane strength this afternoon, with sustained winds of 65 mph. Significantly the system has turned slightly north of west, by about 15 degrees. However, the hurricane center says (http://mesonet.agron.iastate.edu/p.php?id=112997) this jog to the northwest is temporary and the system will resume a westward movement tomorrow.
If the hurricane center's projected path (http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/refresh/graphics_at4+shtml/203524.shtml?5day?large#contents) is correct a dangerous, 130-mph hurricane will be in the northwest Caribbean by next Monday, possibly poised to enter the Gulf of Mexico. Any stronger and it would be a category-4 hurricane. At this time there appears to be no dust and little wind shear (http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/tropic/real-time/atlantic/winds/wg8sht.html) to inhibit this strengthening.
We could be talking about Hurricane Dean tonight or early tomorrow, the season's first.
Tropical Storm Erin: Erin remains poorly organized as it moves toward the northwest at 13 mph. Landfall is expected sometime before noon tomorrow near or south of Corpus Christi. With 40 mph winds Erin has only a narrow window to become more than a minimal tropical storm. The primary threat is rain.

I don't think Erin will be too terrible - perhaps more flooding. We are on the "dirty" side which means we'll get the brunt of the rain but not sure how much will actually be this far north. Galveston will probably get pounded.
