Prilosec worked great for me. That one sounds a bit off based on the notes they provide. JUst a suspicion.

Every drug has its dangers, some more than others. I've taken omeprazole (Prilosec) every day for the past year, b/c it's the only thing that works for me, and I consider it the lesser of two evils. However, it does, reduce the acidity in your stomach (hence the name acid reducer), which has a very important function in our bodies, including the absporption of iron.

Pseudoephedrine

Great stuff, imo...

I was taking a combo of Avandia and Metformin. As soon as the report of heart attacks came out he took me off that combo and put me on another. I am changing doctors because I just want to be on Meformin with no other stuff in it.

I don't take the decongestants anymore. I do use a Neti Pot or Sinu Clean. It really works well and I don't have the Sinus infections I used to have.

Interesting, because the article recommends what you use (Neti Pot) as a "New Strategy" instead of taking Pseudoephedrine.

That's funny because it's hardly new ;).

My dad has emphysema and uses advair. He was just in the ER yesterday and they can't seem to get it under control.:( They flushed his bronchial tubes in Pittsburgh yesterday and within 2hrs he couldn't breath, his heart rate was high and he got a fever. I was worried sick. Still am. He just can't seem to get better.

No it's not new, I have been using it for a few years. I do take meds for high blood pressure so decongestants haven't been an option for me for a few years. But it seems like more doctors are recommending it as opposed to other forms of treatment for sinus problems and allergies.

Glad to hear you like the Neti Pot things. I've always seen them but have never tried them. Will have to try them next time I get a sinus infection.

If you use them regularly you don't get sinus infections. I have the worse allergies, 3 bouts with allergists and shots throughout my life had done nothing to make them better. But I am a walking ad for the Neti Pot. In all the time I have been using it, I have not had a sinus infection or bronchitis. And I can breathe at night!

I have used the neti pot thing and it is weird. I don't use it regularly though. I told my dad to ask about his advair and thanks for posting that info ISG. I hope it may help him out!!

Folks, I posted this Article knowing that some "may" be offended if they take one of the drugs and like it; But others will find info here that can maybe save a life. Today, we know that even physicians know little about drugs and that the drug companies are desperate for the next billion dollar profit source...so we the consumer need all the information we can get...exchange of genuine helpful information has always been one of my major goals in life. :)

Great link to post. Thanks Cook!

I know Pseudoephedrine isn't great for you and rarely use it. But, it does work for what it made for.

If your just not into the Neti pot, they have this one that does the same thing. I did see these (maybe not this brand) at HEB. They were about 9.99

My daughter won't use the Neti pot and I'm thinking about getting one of these for her because you don't have to pour it in your nose.

I'm pretty sure that was the drug that gave my dad his heart attack :(.

Ugh, sorry to hear that. I guess I shouldn't be taking it with a heart condition, huh? Seriously, I only take it every once in awhile. I pretty much stopped using it when you started having to leave your first born child with the store to purchase it. What a PITA just to purchase a few pills.

Yeah, this was a good 15 years ago I guess... I think it was in Sudafed at the time?

It was in every decongestant on the market. We were being saturated with it. It was also in every diet pill. It is dangerous because it raises your blood pressure and if you already have heart trouble/high bp, then you are even more susceptible to HA or stroke. Very few docs use it now. The Neti pot, I think, has been around for hundreds of years in other countries (far east maybe) and just now getting popular here in US. Dr. Oz swears by it. Does pouring the h20 in your nose choke you or cause any discomfort?

Momoftwo; You are the real hero for loving and watching out for your Dad....I'm just happy you found some info to help him....let us know how he progresses.

FamilyGal; I am worried about your heart after reading the article.

My sincere thanks to all of you for posting your experiences with medications; please continue to do so.

If you follow the directions it does not choke you. It doesn't even go down your throat. This is gonna sound gross, but it's in one nasal passage and out the other, unless of course you don't hold your mouth open like the directions say. Since it's saline water and not straight H20 it doesn't irritate your nose like regular water would.

Hi Cook! I just thought I would tell you that my father spoke to one of his docs and they want to see this article! I am going to email his one doc and see what he has to say. None of the docs or nurses has read or seen it. I hope it will help. Thanks again!!

Wow! Great News!! Hey...maybe this will be "the start of something big".. :D

Seriously though; although I know nothing about Advair, I do know quite abit about advertising. This is a very heavily advertised and promoted NEW drug. I have found that most of the time the really hotly advertised products are not the best. You have to wonder...why so much pushing of doctors and patients to use new drugs with such potentially harmful side effects; And without much meaningful long term testing and trials.

Plaese keep us posted.

Today, we know that even physicians know little about drugs....

That's for sure! It took a week of detoxing at a different hospital to undo the damage done to my mom when they crushed her OxyContin. I asked our pharmacist why the doctor or nurses wouldn't know that that drug shouldn't be crushed, and he said that oftentimes doctors and nurses don't know as much about medications as pharmacists do since their focus in medical school isn't on drugs.

Yeah, I am another who has preached this for years. In South American countries, at least the ones I am familiar with, the druggist is king of the prescription drugs. The doctor will recommend a person take one for his ailment but the druggist keeps tabs on the chemicals and latest issues, etc.

It was the pharmacist who caught a serious potential fatal drug interaction that a doctor (who was on call for our doctor) perscribed. I always had a list of meds and told him everything my child was on, when the pharmacist called him about the drug, the doc's comment was "Yeah, so what's the problem". I heard the pharmacist say, "If I give him this drug, with the other meds he's taking it will kill him".

As I've stated several times on here, we rely on a pharmacists knowledge waaaay more than a doctors'. Another important thing to practice, is use the SAME pharmacy, rather than skip around here and there just for a $4 prescription. They have on record what you are taking and are know about drug interactions.
