We're looking for new camping spots within a 3 hour drive... tent or RV. We're camping at Lake Conroe soon, but our usual spot is a place in Trinity. Where do you guys like to go?

We camp out every Thanksgiving weekend and up until this past year we camped out in Huntsville. We tried the state park in Fairfield this year and LOVED it. (Fairfield is just south of Dallas.)

There is a beautiful lake with a beach surrounded by the forest. It was a nice change from the usual sight of pine trees.

We've been fishing at Huntsville State Park and we noticed they have great campsites there. There are even small enclosed screened-in tables with most of the sites. The lake there is called Lake Ravenwood and there are paddle boats and canoes to rent. There's a playground but I didn't see a place to swim. We've fished there a couple times with our grandson.

I forgot to add that it's not more than 45 minutes from here straight up I-45. There is a place to swim after I checked the site. Here's the link:

There is a place to swim at Huntsville. It is near where you rent the paddleboats. Personally, I would only swim in the designated areas because of the alligators.

Earl just read that people who had been leaving their fish on stringers in the lake overnight were coming back to find them eaten by the alligators the next morning - I'm sure this isn't in the fishing area.

We have gone to Rusk once a year for a long time now. It's 2-1/2 to 3 hours away. We camp at Rusk State Park.

Bastrop State Park is wonderful as well. Hiking trails, canoes, a lake, etc. I haven't been there in a few years, but I've heard it's nicer than before! It's a little under 3 hours away as well!

We like Sommerville. There is a lake and several parks around it. Nails Creek is the state park. It's northwest of here maybe an hour and half to two hours away, depends on who is driving. ;)

I forgot about Sommerville. We love that lake and park as well.

We went camping this weekend at a place out in Waller? Hempstead? Anyway, it's a Yogi Bear Campground and my kids love it. They've been a couple of times with my parents, but we had a bunch of family bring their RV's and a few of us rented their cabins. It was so much fun! We can't wait to go back!
