Can anyone recommend a romantic getaway in Austin? :) It doesn't have to be downtown. Acutally, it would probably be better if it weren't. DH isn't crazy about big downtown areas.

I've heard that the Driskill Hotel in Austin is fantastic! It's pricey, but historic and beautiful. Here's their link:

They are downtown, but still worth a look. I'm sure there are a bunch of B&B's near or in Austin, but I don't have any recommendations there. If B&B's are what you are looking for, Fredericksburg seems to be a great place for those. DH and I want to go there for a weekend sometime. I've pretty thoroughly researched B&B's in Fredericksburg on the internet and the one I'd love to stay in is the Austin Street Retreat. They have several cottages that are just beautiful:

Hope you guys have fun!

Thanks, TripleA. Our next door neighbors just came back from Fredricksburg. I hadn't thought of that. We've never been to Austin and we've heard so much about how pretty the country is in that area. We want to make a weekend trip for our anniversary.

I think that is where ds and dil-to be are staying the night they get married. If you want to see the hill country, try outlying areas...Fredericksburg, Blanco, or many others to see that won't be nearly as crowded as Austin. If you do go to Austin the south part of Congress is where there are some eclectic stores and the bats.

I think the hill country sounds great. DH would like that better than the city. Fredricsburg may be just the place.
Bats? Like winged bats - those little creatures which fly around at night and carry rabies? I don't think that sounds too romantic ;).

It's not too romantic slapping at mosquitos, either! ;)

Surely, there couldn't be any more mosquitos up in hill country than there are here??

Probably less?
Have a good trip!

We did one over the winter, and stayed at the lovely 1110 Carriage House Inn, located west of the UT campus on 22 1/2 street. The inkeeper was a charming woman, the room was delightful, and the cost was moderate. 512-472-2333.

Thanks, Tiger. I checked out the website. It looks wonderful. They still have rooms available for the two days we would want them so so I can add it to my list for consideration.
