How much academic work do you have your kids work on over the summer? I'm worried we're headed into the "too much" category and it's only been the first week! Maybe I could do away with the summer packet the school sent home...

We didn't receive any summer packets and to be honest, I don't do a dang thing academically with them in the summer. My twins still read A LOT and we still read at night with my youngest. But, that's about it. They need a break and WE need a break in my opinion.

I've always felt like that as well. DS still struggled with math, so we have relunctantly agreed to keep him in tutoring this summer. I just don't want 2nd grade to be a disaster and it's been really good for his self-esteem when he can handle the work and the tutoring helps that. The school sent home a packet (not just a few worksheets! It's a pretty big packet, imo) of summer activities to keep their skills up. All I wanted to do this summer was our little Latin lesson... We're only doing maybe an hour's worth of work and this is the 3rd day. I let them take a break this week. I just never thought I'd be one of "those parents", but I saw my kid really struggle and I don't want to go there again :(.

If he is struggling, I agree keeping up on it, but at a minimum. That way it won't be harder come fall. For him or for YOU to catch him up.

Maybe you could get some math in other ways. Like have them calculate miles to grandmas or add up stuff at the grocery store. I think those worksheets get old. It's probably better to do it now though so you aren't stuck with a struggling kid in the fall.

There are lots of ways to get math in without a notebook. Schnauzermom's suggestions or with Pokemon cards, keeping score on a game, etc... The way I got my oldest son to even be interested in reading was so he could read his Pokemon cards. They also helped with math. Is he into anything like that?
